4 Dirty Secrets About The Commercial Soap Industry

Here's four dirty secrets the commercial soap companies wouldn't want you to know.

  1. It's not really soap! It's mostly detergent. Commercial soap companies spend a lot of money on misleading ads that claim natural but in actuality they use artificial foaming agents and chemical hardeners to produce a hard bar.
  2. Most contain sodium tallowate (animal fat). I'm not knocking anyone that uses animal fat. The pioneers used animal fat for the fats needed in soap. But commercial soap companies buy cheap animal fat. It makes you wonder where does it come from? Was it from animals from overcrowded feed lots? How was the animal treated or fed?
  3. Natural glycerin has been removed. There's big profit in selling glycerin for products like creams and lotions. Commercial companies remove the glycerin to gain a bigger profit by selling it or using for other products. Handmade soap makers don't remove glycerin so you benefit from all the naturally occurring glycerin in your soap.
  4. Claims of 20% larger does not mean your bar lasts longer. Yes, the bar is bigger because their commercial machines used to manufacture "soap" has put 20% more air in the bar giving the appearance of a bigger bar.
The best advise we can give is know what you're buying. Be careful what you put on your skin. Buy local or handmade soaps from a source you trust.

This Week's Top Story About Our Goats

Meet Gardenia. She's the latest goat added to the family. She's adapting really well and getting along with the other goats.

At first she was kept separate from the other goats and we spent one on one time together. Now she's with everyone else and meeting her new friends.

She was bred before bringing her home so she should kids around April 15.

We make our own herbal goat cookies to maintain our goats health. She's not quite sure about them yet but given time I think she'll love them as much as the other goats do.

7 Simple Secrets To Rocking The New You

You're more in control of having healthier skin than you think. These simple tips can help your body both inside and out.

  1. Drink Water - Hydrating your body by drinking water has many benefits including your skin.
  2. Avoid Sugar - I know this one doesn't sound so simple but sugar causes inflammation in the body which breaks down collagen and elastin. This leads to sagging and wrinkly skin.
  3. Get Sleep - Sleep is important for you body and skin. When you sleep your skin goes into repair mode.
  4. Relax - Stress isn't good for our bodies. Take time to treat yourself to a hot bath and unwind.
  5. Gently Wash Your Face - You don't need to scrub the skin off your face. You can use a mild soap like Goat Milk Soap and gently breakdown dirt, oil and makeup.
  6. Exercise - Your skin benefits from breaking a sweat. Exercising improves circulation.
  7. Use Natural Products - We make a Face Serum for many skin types that contain pure natural oils and essential oils your skin type can benefit from.

Soap Making Methods

Maybe you've wondered how to make soap or how we make our goat milk soap. In this blog we'll discuss the different processes for soap making and why we use Cold Process.

1) Melt & Pour - is a soap base you can purchase in bulk. Melt down add your own fragrance, essential oil, herbs or colors and pour into a mold. Let it harden and it's ready. This may be a great start for those interested in soap making and want to explore their creative side with colors, swirls and creating a style for you.

2) Cold Process - This is our preferred method. It's also known as CP,  "old fashion" or"like grandma made". With the method you have more control over the ingredients. You create your own recipes, unlike melt and pour where you buy a block of soap with the ingredients of the manufactures choice. Cold Process soap requires a cure time. We let our soaps cure for at least six weeks. Cold Process requires heat but not cooking or a long heat time. We feel by using cold process we do not have to over heat our milk. Therefore we get to keep all the goodness the milk has to offer your skin. This way our milk isn't over processed keeping all the vitamins, minerals and good stuff for your skin.

3) Hot Process - This method is like Cold Process but requires extra heat to speed up the soap making process. This method removes excess moisture so it's ready to use when it cools. The biggest advantage is not waiting the cure time. In my experience the bar doesn't last as long as cold process.

We're not knocking anyone's method. To sum it up here's why we use cold process:

  • Doesn't require extra heat changing the quality of our goat milk,
  • Produces a harder bar of soap, creating a longer lasting bar.
  • We don't need to add glycerin since it naturally occurs in natural soap making. We don't remove it like big soap companies. All that moisturizing goodness stays right in the bar.
Try Natural Goat Milk Soap and feel the difference!
